Arithmetic Reasoning Patterns and Sequences Answer and Explanation

In working as an ASVAB tutor, I see the importance of reviewing patterns and sequences with the students in my ASVAB prep course.  In my book, The ASVAB Tutor’s Arithmetic Reasoning Study Guide, I include patterns and sequences as one of the 15 subtopics I cover in class.

On 3/20, I presented an Arithmetic Reasoning question on patterns and sequences.

The question is:

What comes next in the pattern?

1/4, 1/16, 1/64, _____

  1. 1/68
  2. 1/80
  3. 1/128
  4. 1/256

This pattern includes fractions.  Can you see the pattern that is happening here?  The numerator stays the same in each case. The denominator changes.  The denominator is multiplied by 4 from one fraction to the next.

4 x 4 = 16

16 x 4 = 64

The final answer is found by multiplying 64 by 4

64 x 4 = 256.

The answer to this pattern is 1/256.

Did you know how to complete this pattern?
