Word Knowledge Answer

In working as an ASVAB tutor, I emphasize the importance of reviewing common ASVAB vocabulary, prefixes, root words, and suffixes.  Yesterday I presented a question on Word Knowledge.  The question is about a suffix.

The question is:

What does the suffix -gamy mean?

A  . Marriage

B. Game

C. Word

D. Help

-Gamy means marriage.  The correct answer is Choice A. Marriage.

I will present the meaning of the words I listed yesterday that consisted of the suffix -gamy.

Monogamy means marriage to one person

Polygamy means having plural wives or husbands at the same time, usually the marriage of one man to more than one woman.

Bigamy is the offense of marrying one person when already legally married to another.

Endogamy refers to marriage only within the tribe to which one belongs.

Misogamy is the hatred of marriage.
