Ratios

If there is a 5:4 ratio of sheep to goats and there are 25 sheep, how many goats are there?

The topic of ratios is one of the important topics that is covered in the Arithmetic Reasoning section of the ASVAB.  In my book, The ASVAB Tutor’s Arithmetic Reasoning Study Guide, I cover 15 subtopics.  One of them is ratios.  Many of my students become overwhelmed at the thought of working with ratio problems.  However, after hearing how to solve them, they realize they are not as difficult as they thought.  Many ratio problems can be solved as proportions.  Some are not solved as proportions.  This example presents a ratio of sheep and goats.  There is a ratio of 5:4 sheep to goats.  This means there are 5 sheep for every 4 goats.  If there are 25 sheep, do you know how many goats there are?  I will present the answer and explanation tomorrow.
