In life, we do not truly appreciate the things that come too easily. When we work hard for things, it makes us appreciate them more when we finally achieve them. If we earn perfect scores on every test without even trying, it does not mean nearly as much as mastering a test topic that was once difficult. In life, we look back at the toughest times and appreciate the fact that we overcame. Tough times bring out the strength in us that we never knew we had. In working as an ASVAB tutor, I have countless stories of students who overcame so much in their lives. I have met students who had lived in orphanages, foster care, struggled to learn English, faced challenges in learning math, overcame struggles in reading. The list goes on. When I talk to those students who overcame so much, they have such a sense of pride in knowing what they overcame to make it to where they are. Success takes on a greater value when the adversity that was overcome is taken into account.
