Charlie Chaplin was an English comic, actor, filmmaker, and composer who became famous during the time period of silent films. He lived through a childhood of poverty and hardship. His father was not in his life, and Charlie was sent to work by age 9. His mother was committed to a mental hospital when he was 14. Charlie Chaplin knew difficult times in life which makes his quote more meaningful. He says you will never find a rainbow if you are looking down. Knowing that this quote came from someone who had more than his share of hard times, makes it more inspiring. As an ASVAB tutor, I work to remind my students to look on the bright side of things in life. When people become discouraged, I remind them to focus on their strengths and on where they are headed instead of focusing on their weaknesses and past mistakes. Look upward and move upward.
