Inspirational Quote

It is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation. -Herman Melville

Herman Melville was an American novelist of the 19th century who was born in New York City.  He was also a short story writer and poet of the American Renaissance.  His best works include Moby-Dick, Typee, and Billy Budd, Sailor.  In his quote, Melville reminds us of the importance of being original.  He frowns upon imitation.  He says that it is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation.  In working as an ASVAB tutor, I remind my students not to compare their journey with anyone else’s.  We are all unique individuals.  We need to remain true to our originality.  They say imitation is the greatest form of flattery.  Maybe for the person you are imitating, it is flattery, but when you imitate others, you are not flattering yourself.  Be true to yourself and strive to be an original.
