Motivational Quote from Booker T. Washington
You measure the size of accomplishment by the obstacles you had to overcome to reach your goals. -Booker T. Washington
Today’s quote is from Booker T. Washington. His quote reminds us that our accomplishments need to be measured by the obstacles we overcame to reach them. If anyone understands overcoming obstacles, it is Booker T. Washington. He was born into slavery. As a child, he would see the white children in school through the window. He watched them reading books. He wanted to learn as well, but it was illegal to teach enslaved people to read and write. As a child, he worked for a woman who saw something in him. She was impressed by his intelligence and character and allowed him to go to school for one hour per day in the winter months. When he was 16, he walked 500 miles to Hampton Normal Agricultural Institute of Virginia. He received a scholarship. He became a teacher after the Civil War. In 1881, he founded the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. It is now known as Tuskegee University. His institute focus on training African Americans in agricultural studies. Knowing Booker T. Washington’s background, gives us insight into the fact that this man knew what it was to overcome obstacles. As an ASVAB tutor, I like to remind my students of the stories of people like Booker T. Washington who would not let any obstacle hold him back from achieving his dreams.
