George R.R. Martin is an American novelist, screenwriter, television producer and short story writer. He is the author of the epic fantasy novels, A Song of Ice and Fire, which were adapted into the Emmy Award winning series Game of Thrones (2011-2019). His quote reminds us of the need to accept our own flaws. When we have accepted our own flaws, no one can use them against us. This is a powerful quote. After we accept our flaws, we learn how to work with them. We learn how to overcome. We accept who we are, and others’ words will not harm us. In working as an ASVAB tutor, I notice that some students have become discouraged by their flaws. Instead of working on their flaws by using their strengths, they spend their time criticizing themselves. I remind my students that I do not allow negative self-talk in my class. Each person is in class to better themselves and there is no need to insult yourself in life. Find your weakness and work on it and overcome. Plain and simple.
