Arithmetic Reasoning
Ratios
If there is a 6:3 ratio of cars to trucks, and there are a total of 81 vehicles, how many cars are there?
The topic of ratios is one of the important topics that is covered in the Arithmetic Reasoning section of the ASVAB. In my book, The ASVAB Tutor’s Arithmetic Reasoning Study Guide, I cover 15 subtopics. One of them is ratios. In working as an ASVAB tutor, I see that many of my students become overwhelmed at the thought of working with ratio problems. However, after hearing how to solve them, they realize they are not as difficult as they thought. Many ratio problems can be solved as proportions. Some are not solved as proportions. This example presents a ratio of cars to trucks and the total number of vehicles. There is a 6:3 ratio of cars to trucks. That means there are 6 cars for every 3 trucks. Do you know how to figure out how many cars there are?
I will present the answer and explanation tomorrow.
