Miles Per Gallon Question

If a car gets 20 mpg and drives for 260 miles, and gas costs $3.50 per gallon, how much will the trip cost?

As an ASVAB tutor, one of the topics I teach is miles per gallon.  Miles per gallon questions appear on the Arithmetic Reasoning section of the ASVAB.   This is one of the 15 subtopics. I cover in my book, The ASVAB Tutor’s Arithmetic Reasoning Study Guide.  I see that many of the students in my ASVAB prep course need to review miles per gallon questions.  These problems have two steps.  People mistakenly think that these can be solved using proportions.  These are not proportion problems.  Do you know how to miles per gallon problems?  I will present the answer and explanation tomorrow.
