What technique helps in answering main idea questions?
- use context clues
- focus on details
- look for sequence words
- read the first sentence of each paragraph and the last sentence of the story
Main idea questions are very common questions in the Paragraph Comprehension section of the ASVAB. Main idea questions ask what the passage is mostly about. As an ASVAB tutor, I remind my students of the different strategies that help in answering the different types of reading comprehension questions. The different types of questions include main idea, detail, vocabulary, sequence, inference, cause and effect, author’s tone, author’s purpose, etc. In my book, The ASVAB Tutor’s Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension Study Guide, I present tips on how to find the answers to these different types of questions.
