As an ASVAB tutor, I remind the students in my ASVAB prep course that studying Latin and Greek root words can improve their ASVAB vocabulary score on the Word Knowledge section of the test. Having a strong vocabulary can also have a positive effect on one’s Paragraph Comprehension score. The Latin root semi- has a Greek equivalent. Semi- means water. There are a number of words in the English language with the Latin root semi-.
Examples include semicircle, semiannual, semiarid, semiconscious, semiformal, semisweet, etc.
The meanings of these words are:
Semiannual means something that happens once every half year: twice a year
Semiarid means a halfway dry area.
Semicircle means a half circle.
Semiconscious means halfway conscious, not completely aware.
Semiformal means halfway between casual and formal dress.
Semisweet means halfway between bitter and sweet.
Do you know the Greek root that means half-?
I will present the answer and explanation tomorrow.
