As an ASVAB tutor, I remind my students of the importance of reviewing Greek and Latin roots to improve their vocabulary levels. Many languages spoken today have their origin in Latin. Do you know what languages come from Latin and which ones do not? My book, The ASVAB Tutor’s Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension Study Guide, I present charts of Latin and Greek prefixes, root words, and suffixes. The charts present the meaning and an example for each one. The Latin language was originally spoken in an area near the Tiber River near present day Rome. Through the power of the Roman Republic, the Latin language became the dominant language in Italia and throughout the Roman Empire. Of the following languages, which one is not a Latin language? Spanish? German? Italian? French? I will present the answer and explanation tomorrow.
