As an ASVAB tutor, I place an emphasis on reviewing algebra with my students. In my book, The ASVAB Tutor’s Mathematics Knowledge Study Guide, I review 15 subtopics.  Some of are different areas within algebra.  I review factoring, FOIL (distribution in algebra), solving for x, and basic operations with polynomials.  Today’s example involves solving for x.  In order to solve for x, you need to get the x on one side of the equal sign and the numbers on the other side.  I tell the students in my ASVAB prep course to pretend that the numbers and letters do not get along which is why they need to be separated.  Do you know how to solve for x?  I will present the answer and explanation.
