Inspirational Quote
When the going gets tough, the tough get going. -Joe Kennedy
Today’s quote is from Joseph P. Kennedy, father of President John F. Kennedy. If anyone has endured tough times, it is the Kennedy family. Joseph Kennedy was the father of nine children, and tragedies happened to a number of his children. His daughter Rosemary was born with intellectual disabilities and had a failed operation to correct it. The operation left her unable to care for herself to live in a home where others cared for her. His son Joseph Jr. was killed in a plane crash while serving in the Navy during World War II. His daughter, Kathleen, died in a plane crash. His grandson, Patrick Kennedy (son of President John F. Kennedy) died as an infant. His son, President John F. Kennedy, was assassinated while serving as president. His son, Ted, was injured in a plane crash that killed others. His son, Robert, was assassinated. Joseph Kennedy Sr. and his wife Rose lived to see all these tragedies in their family. If anyone understands tough times, it would be the Kennedy family. This quote reminds us to take action when times are tough. It is then we need to call on our tenacity to endure and to overcome. In working as an ASVAB tutor, I remind my students that when the work is difficult, it is then that they need to put more effort into their work. When the work is tough, work harder. As Joseph Kennedy Sr. said, when the going gets tough, the tough get going.
