Word Knowledge

Yesterday I presented a question about the meaning of a suffix.

What does the suffix -ness mean?

  1. without
  2. state of
  3. acting
  4. living

The suffix -ness is one of the suffixes I present in my study guide, The ASVAB Tutor’s Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension Study Guide.  The suffix -ness means state of.  There are many English words that consist of the suffix -ness.  Examples include happiness, laziness, tiredness, sadness, emptiness, loneliness, etc.

Happiness is the state of being happy.

Laziness is the state of being lazy.

Tiredness is the state of being tired.

Sadness is the state of being sad.

Emptiness is the state of being empty.

Loneliness is the state of being lonely.

Reviewing prefixes, root words, and suffixes can help to expand your vocabulary.  Never underestimate the effect of reviewing common Latin and Greek roots of words.
