Yesterday I presented a question about square roots.

As an ASVAB tutor, I remind my students of the importance of being able to find squares and square roots as well as cubes and cube roots.  I included this topic in my book, The ASVAB Tutor’s Mathematic Knowledge Study Guide.  This is an important part of Mathematics Knowledge review.

Do you know what the square root of 144 is?

The square root of a number means what number multiplies by itself to give you that number.  To find the square root of 144, we need to ask ourselves what number multiplies by itself to give us 144.  There are 2 possible answers to this question.  D

12 x 12 = 144 and -12 x -12 = 144

Both 12 and -12 are square roots of 144.
