Word Knowledge

Yesterday I presented a question on root words.

Which languages do most English root words come from?

  1. Latin and German
  2. Greek and German
  3. Latin and Greek
  4. Latin and Russian

The correct answer is Latin and Greek.  About 60% of English comes from Latin and Greek roots.  As an ASVAB tutor, I remind my students of the importance of knowing the Latin and Greek roots to build their vocabularies.  Studying vocabulary words is also helpful to boost the Word Knowledge score.  However, I remind my students not to overlook the importance of reviewing prefixes, root words, and suffixes.  Knowing just one root word could help to expand your understanding of 15-20 new words.  Make sure you take time to become more familiar with Latin and Greek roots to enhance your vocabulary.
