As an ASVAB tutor, I stress the importance of learning prefixes, root words, and suffixes to the students in my ASVAB prep course. One of the root words in my book, The ASVAB Tutor’s Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension Study Guide is the root word -gress.

Progress means forward movement toward a destination.
Progression means the process of developing or moving gradually toward a more advanced state.
Progressive means happening or developing gradually or in stages; proceeding step by step.
Regress means to return to a former or less developed state.
Regression means the return to a less developed state.
Digress means to leave the main subject temporarily in speech or writing.
