Yesterday I presented a question about triangles.
If a right triangle has an angle that measures 40 degrees, what is the measure of the third angle?
- 40 degrees
- 50 degrees
- 90 degrees
- 140 degrees
As an ASVAB tutor, I remind my students of the importance of knowing about triangles for the Mathematics Knowledge section of the ASVABV. The three angles of a triangle have a sum of 180 degrees. A right triangle has one angle that measures 90 degrees. If the second angle is 40 degrees, it is possible to figure out what the third angle is.
90 + 40 = 130.
Since the three angles add up to 180, to figure out the measure of the third angle, subtract 130 from 180
180 – 130 = 50
The third angle has a measure of 50 degrees.
