Paragraph Comprehension
Which strategy is not helpful in reading comprehension?
- read the questions first
- skim through the passage
- read all answer choices
- base your answer on your own opinion
Yesterday I presented this question on helpful strategies in reading comprehension. As an ASVAB tutor, I focus on the importance of knowing useful reading strategies to improve performance on the Paragraph Comprehension section of the ASVAB. Do you know which one is not a helpful strategy? Choice A is read the questions first. This is a helpful strategy since reading the questions before reading the story prepares you mind on what to search for in the story. Choice B is skim through the passage. This is a useful strategy since glancing through the passage could help you to find the answer to the question. Choice C is read all the answer choices. Reading all the answer choices is an important strategy to employ. Sometimes there is an answer choice that seems good, but if you read all the choices, you will find the one that is the best choice. Choice D is base your answer on your own opinion. This choice is the one that is not helpful in reading comprehension. You should never base the answers on your own opinion. Base your answer on what was written in the passage.
