Yesterday I presented a question about the root word dem-.

What language does the root word dem- come from?

As an ASVAB tutor, I remind my students of the importance of reviewing prefixes, root words, and suffixes for the Word Knowledge section of the ASVAB.  Most root words come from Latin or Greek.

The root word dem- comes from the Greek.  Dem- means people.

Democracy is a government by the people

Demagogue is a political leader who seeks support by appealing to desires and prejudices of ordinary people instead of a national argument.

Demographic relates to the structure of populations.

Epidemic is a widespread disease affecting people.

Pandemic is a disease affecting people that is prevalent over a whole country or the whole world.
