Arithmetic Reasoning

Yesterday I presented a question about percentages.

What is the most reduced form of 80% when written as a fraction?

  1. 80/100
  2. 8/10
  3. 40/50
  4. 4/5

As an ASVAB tutor, I remind my students of the importance of being able to work with percentages, fractions, and decimals.  Being able to work with each of these is not enough, it is also necessary to be able to make percent, fraction, and decimal conversions.  Do you know how to change a percent into a fraction?

To change a percent into a fraction, place the number over 100.

80% becomes 80/100

80/100 is not in the most reduced form.

80/100 = 8/10 when I divide the top and bottom by 10.

8/10 = 4/5 when I divide the top and bottom by 2.

4/5 is the most reduced form.

Did you know how to answer this question?
