Arithmetic Reasoning
Yesterday I presented a question about converting a mixed number to a percent.
Change the mixed number to a percent.
5 1/5
As an ASVAB tutor, I place a strong emphasis on the conversion of fractions, decimals, and percents in preparation for the Arithmetic Reasoning section of the ASVAB. The topic of conversions of fractions, decimals, and percents is one of the 15 subtopics that I review in my classes that cover Arithmetic Reasoning. Many people do not like to work with converting fractions, decimals, and percents, but I remind them of the importance of being able to do these conversions for this exam. Today’s question requires the conversion of a mixed number to a percent.
To change the mixed number to a percent, change the mixed number to an improper fraction first.
5 1/5
Multiply the denominator by the whole number and add the numerator.
5 x 5 = 25 + 1 = 26/5
5 1/5 = 26/5
Then set 26/5 equal to x/100.
26/5 = x/100
Cross multiply and solve for x.
5x = 2600
Divide 2600 by 5
x = 520%
The answer is 520%
Did you know how to change the mixed number into a percent?
