Paragraph Comprehension
Yesterday I presented a question on author’s tone.
Do you know what the author’s tone is in a ghost story?
In working as an ASVAB tutor, I remind my students of the different types of questions that can appear on the Paragraph Comprehension section of the test. Some questions like main idea, detail and vocabulary might seem to be more common types of questions. However, author’s tone can also appear on the exam. The author’s tone is the attitude or mood seen within a story.
The author’s tone in a ghost story would be a frightening or scary tone. The author writes the story with intent of scaring the reader and therefore the tone of the story needs to be frightening. A ghost story would not work if it was funny or uplifting. The mood would need to be scary.
