Paragraph Comprehension

Yesterday I presented a question on author’s purpose.

What is the author’s purpose in writing an advertisement?

  1. To inform
  2. To entertain
  3. To persuade
  4. To lie

In my role as an ASVAB tutor, I review the different types of questions that can appear on the Paragraph Comprehension section of the ASVAB.  Author’s purpose is one of the types of questions that can appear on the ASVAB.  It is the type of question that asks the reason the author wrote the piece.  Three main types of author’s purpose are: to inform, to entertain, and to persuade.  An advertisement is written with the purpose of persuading someone to buy a certain product.
