Algebra with Fractions

Yesterday I presented a question about solving for x.  This question involves algebra with fractions.

The question was:

¾ x = 12

What is x?

This problem involves algebra and fractions.  Algebra is a key part of the Mathematics Knowledge section of the ASVAB.  As an ASVAB tutor, one of the 15 subtopics I review in my ASVAB prep course and in my book, The ASVAB Tutor’s Mathematics Knowledge Study Guide is algebra with fractions.

Do you know how to solve for x when there is fraction in front of the x?

In order to solve for x, it is necessary to multiply by the reciprocal on both sides of the equation.

3/4x = 12

Multiply by 4/3 on each side.

4/3 × 3/4 x = 12/1 × 4/3

4/3 × 3/4 cancels out leaving 1.

It becomes just x

x = 12/1 × 4/3 = 48/3 = 16

x = 16

Did you know how to solve this problem?
