Paragraph Comprehension
Yesterday I presented a question about strategies in answering a main idea question on the Paragraph Comprehension section of the ASVAB.
What technique helps in answering main idea questions?
- use context clues
- focus on details
- look for sequence words
- read the first sentence of each paragraph and the last sentence of the story
In working as an ASVAB tutor, I present my students with tips on answering reading comprehension questions. Knowing how to quickly find the answers to the questions will help boost the score on the Paragraph Comprehension section of the ASVAB. My book, The ASVAB Tutor’s Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension Study Guide, presents tips on answering the different types of questions on the Paragraph Comprehension section of the ASVAB. In answering main ideas questions, choice A would not be helpful. Using context clues helps with vocabulary questions, not main idea questions. Choice B would not be helpful. Focusing on details helps with detail questions, not main idea questions. Choice C would not be helpful. Looking for sequence words helps with sequence questions, not main idea questions. Choice D would be the helpful technique. Reading the first sentence of each paragraph and the last sentence of the story is a helpful technique in finding the main idea of the story. Sometimes, however, it is necessary to read the entire passage to find the main idea question.
