Arithmetic Reasoning

Yesterday I presented a question on distance and rate.  The question asked about 2 trains that start at the same point and travel in different directions.  One travels north at 60 mph and one travels south at 40 mph.  How far apart will they be in 5 hours.  Many of the students in my ASVAB prep course dread this question.   I tell my students that as an ASVAB tutor, this is one of my favorite math questions that can appear on the ASVAB.  It is much simpler than most people realize.  When trains start at the same point and travel different directions, they need to add up the distances each train travels in one hour.

60 mph + 40 mph = 100 miles

In one hour, the trains are 100 miles apart.

In 5 hours, they will be 100 x 5 = 500 miles apart.

Easier than you thought it was, right?
