Arithmetic Reasoning
Distance and Rate
Yesterday I presented a question on distance and rate involving a train.
If a train travels at 70 mph and needs to travel 350 miles and leaves at 10AM, when will it reach the destination?
In working as an ASVAB tutor, I present the topics of miles per gallon in my ASVAB prep course. In my book, The ASVAB Tutor’s Arithmetic Reasoning Study Guide, I include a review of 15 subtopics. One of those topics is distance and rate. This question has two steps.
First, divide 350 miles by 70 mph.
The answer is 5 hours.
If the train leaves at 10 AM and needs to travel for 5 hours, when will it arrive?
5 hours after 10 AM is 3 PM.
The train will reach its destination at 3 PM.
Did you know how to solve this problem?
