Word Knowledge
Yesterday I presented a question on prefixes. Do you know which prefixes appear in metric measurement?
Which one is not a prefix found in words in metric measurement?
- centi-
- milli-
- kilo-
- multi-
Metric measurements have Latin and Greek prefixes in their names that explain the conversion between the units. Three prefixes that are found in metric measurement are: centi-, milli-, and kilo-. Multi- is not a prefix found in words in metric measurement. Centi- is from the Latin and it means hundredth. There are 100 cm in a meter. Milli- is from the Latin and it means thousandth. There are 1000 mm in a meter and 1000 mg in a gram. Kilo- is from the Greek and it means thousand. There are 1000 meters in a kilometer and there are 1000 grams in a kilogram.
Knowing these prefixes is helpful for both Word Knowledge and Arithmetic Reasoning.
