Yesterday presented a question about the prefix- poly.  Do you know what the prefix poly- means?  Poly- is a Greek prefix that means many.

Polygon is a two-dimensional figure that has many sides and angles.

Polyhedron is a three-dimensional figure that has many faces and edges.

Polynomial is a mathematical expression with many terms.

Polysyllabic is a word containing many syllables.

Polymath is a person who knows many things.

Polytheism is the worship of many gods.

Polygamy is the marriage practice of having many spouses.

Polyglot is a person who speaks many languages

Polynesia is a geographical area that has many islands.

As an ASVAB tutor, I remind my students of the importance of studying prefixes, root words, and suffixes to boost their ASVAB vocabulary score.  In knowing the meaning of the prefix poly-, it can be seen how there are many others words that can be understood when the meaning of the prefix is known.
