Happy Thanksgiving!
As an ASVAB tutor, I like to take time to honor America’s holidays. Today is Thanksgiving. It is a federal holiday, a day in which we give thanks. This holiday has its origins in 1621. The Plymouth colonists and the Native Americans shared an autumn harvest feast. This is recognized today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. In September 1620, the small ship known as the Mayflower left Plymouth, England carrying 102 passengers. They were seeking religious freedom. The trip was dangerous and uncomfortable and lasted 66 days. The Pilgrims arrived in Massachusetts Bay and established a village at Plymouth. Their first winder was brutal, and only half of the original people survived until spring.
Thanksgiving took place for those who survived to be thankful. President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November. Thanksgiving is held on the fourth Thursday of November.
On this day, let us be thankful for all the sacrifices our military makes. Many of our military men and women do not have the privilege of spending Thanksgiving with their families because they are serving overseas. Let us take today to be thankful for the brave men and women of our nation who ensure our freedom.
