Space Force’s Birthday

Founded on December 20, 2019

In my role as ASVAB tutor, I choose to honor various military holidays, observances, and anniversaries on my blog posts.  Today, December 20 is the Space Force’s birthday.

The Space Force is the youngest of the United States’ military branches.

It was founded on December 20, 2019, as part of the 2020 National Defense Authorization Act. It is the space service branch of the United States Armed Forces.  The U.S. Space Force is the first new military service in more than 70 years after the U.S. Air Force was founded in 1947.

The Space Force is the smallest United Stated armed service consisting of 8,400 military personnel.  The Space Force falls under the Air Force the same way the Marine Corps falls under the Department of the Navy.  According to the website, spaceforce.mil, “the U.S. Space Force is responsible for organizing, training and equipping Guardians to conduct global space operations that enhance the way our joint and coalition forces fight, while also offering decisionmakers military options to achieve national objectives.
