Solution to the ASVAB Tutor’s Problem on Average Time

Yesterday I posted a problem that is an example of figuring out average time. Finding average is a topic I cover in my ASVAB prep course.  As an ASVAB tutor, I see the importance of focusing on teaching average to help improve my students’ Arithmetic Reasoning score.  To figure out the average amount of hours that Jessica worked each day, you need to divide the total amount of hours worked by the number of days worked.  42 divided by 2 equals 8 2/5 hours.

To change the 2/5 of an hour into minutes, set up a  proportion.

2/5 = x/60  is the proportion to set up since an hour has 60 minutes.  Cross multiply and solve for x.

120 = 5x

Divide by 5 on each side

120 divided by 5 = 24

So 8 2/5 is equal to 8 hours 24 minutes.

Did you know how to solve this problem?
