Prefix Review

Did you know what ab- means?

I wrote a study guide entitled, The ASVAB Tutor’s Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension Study Guide.  My book includes charts of prefixes, root words and suffixes that I tell my students to review.    In working as a tutor for the ASVAB, I make sure to emphasize the significance of studying prefixes, root words and suffixes.  Yesterday I presented the prefix ab-.  Ab- means away from.  Let’s look at different words that have the prefix ab-.  Abduct, abscond, abdicate.   Abduct means to take someone away illegally by force.  Abscond – means to leave hurriedly and secretly.  Abdicate means to give up power or responsibility.  All 3 of these words have the prefix ab- and in some way include away from.  Abduct is take someone away.  Abscond means run away.  Abdicate means to walk away from one’s power or responsibility.

Keep studying root words. It makes a difference with vocabulary.  Always remember to study math as well to help improve your ASVAB math score!
