Word Knowledge Question

Improving your vocabulary is an important part of preparing for the Word Knowledge section of the ASVAB.  I wrote and published my book, The ASVAB Tutor’s Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension Study Guide to help my students to prepare the two verbal sections of the ASVAB.  I remind my students of the importance of studying common ASVAB vocabulary words to prepare for the test.  I included over 500 of those words in my book.  I also remind my students of the importance of reviewing Latin and Greek prefixes, root words and suffixes.

Today I present a Word Knowledge question.

The question is about the meaning of a prefix.

The question is:

What does the prefix “retro” mean?

  1. Metropolitan
  2. Redo
  3. Backward
  4. Fast

Many English words contain the root prefix “retro”.  Examples include retrospect, retrospective, retrograde, retrovirus, retrogress, retrogression, retroactive, and retrofit.

Do you know the meaning of any of these words?  Knowing the prefixes, roots and suffixes help with understanding the meaning of many words.  Make sure to review Latin and Greek root words to improve your vocabulary skills for the Word Knowledge section of the ASVAB.
