Memorial Day is a special day set aside in our year to honor the military men and women who lost their lives during their service to our country. They gave the ultimate sacrifice. While people enjoy a long weekend, they should not lose sight of the reason for this long weekend.
As an ASVAB tutor, I have met many people with the dream of enlisting. I have seen people go from the inception of their dream to serve, to passing the test, to enlisting, to serving, to finishing up their service. In teaching an ASVAB prep course, I have seen countless firsthand cases of heroes in the making. People who join the military do so for a variety of reasons, and each reason I have seen has been an honorable one. Some people join to follow in the footsteps of their military family. Some want to give back to our country. Some want to be a part of something bigger than themselves. Some want to pursue higher education or a trade. I never thought I could learn so much by teaching others. I provide help for ASVAB math and vocabulary, and I receive an insight into the minds and lives of future military members. I am proud of the service men and women of our nation and am grateful for their service.
