National POW/MIA Recognition Day
Third Friday in September
In working as an ASVAB tutor, I see the value in honoring the various military holidays, observances, and anniversaries. Today is one of the military anniversaries of our nation that I would like to mention in my blog post. Today, September 20, is National POW/MIA Recognition Day. This date was established in 1979 through a proclamation signed by President Jimmy Carter. Each year, the third Friday in September is established as this day of recognition of the Prisoners of War and those Missing in Action. Each year on this day, a national ceremony is held. It is traditionally held at the Pentagon with representatives from each branch of military service. Other celebrations are held across the country on military bases, ships, state capitols, schools, and veterans’ facilities. This day is meant to honor those who were held captive and returned home as well as those who are still missing.
