National Former POW Recognition Day

In working as an ASVAB tutor, I mention various military holidays, observances, and anniversaries in my ASVAB blog.  Today, April 9, is National Former Prisoner of War Recognition Day.  This is a different and separate holiday from the National POW/MIA Day.  Today’s holiday was designated by Congress in 1988.  This day honors the men and women who suffered while held by their captors.   The movement to establish this day of recognition was started in 1984 by former Prisoners of War (POWs).  It finally came to pass in 1988.  President Ronald Reagan proclaimed National Former Prisoners of War Recognition Day on April 1, 1988 through a Presidential Proclamation.  He established the observance for April 9, 1988.  This observance has carried on ever since.
