Prove yourself to yourself, not others. -Unknown
When it comes to the importance of impressing ourselves and not others, a quote of Winston Churchill comes to mind. Churchill said, “When you’re 20, you care what everybody thinks. When you’re 40 you stop caring what everyone thinks. When you’re 40, you stop caring what everyone thinks. When you’re 60, you realize no one was ever thinking about you in the first place.” This quote only makes sense after you have lived through enough experiences to make you realize that impressing others should not be a priority. It is a concept that is hard to convey to the youth. I do remind my students of the importance of impressing themselves. They need to realize that in life for each of us, the only person that will surely be each of us for the rest of our lives are our own individual selves.
