In life, we need to realize that we are our own competition. As an ASVAB tutor, I meet many students who compare themselves to others. People tell me stories such as, “My friend passed the ASVAB on the first attempt. I don’t know why I failed.” I remind them that each of us is our own competition. We cannot compare ourselves to others. We need to compare ourselves to who we were yesterday. When we compare ourselves to others, we are measuring our progress with someone else’s ruler. We need to look at our own growth and not others. In that way, we measure our progress with our own ruler.
