Colin Power was an American politician, a statesman, diplomat and a United States Army officer. He was the first African-American secretary of state under President George W. Bush.
He was the son of two Jamaican immigrants, and he grew up in the South Bronx. He joined the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) and spent 35 years in the Army. His achievements were numerous. Colin Powell’s quote reminds us that dreams do not fall into our laps. We need to work hard to achieve our goals. As an ASVAB tutor, I see truth in what he is saying. I used to think I could tell which of my students would pass the ASVAB based on their previous ASVAB scores. Over the years, I learned that was not true. The determination and motivation of my students meant far more than their most recent scores. Those who had an unstoppable determination to succeed were the ones who achieved their dreams.
