In working as an ASVAB tutor, I see the value in providing motivational messages to the students in my ASVAB prep course. Some of the most inspiring people are the ones who overcame the greatest adversities in their lives. Les Brown is one of these people. Looking at him now as one of the most successful motivational speakers in the world, it is hard to imagine his origin. He was abandoned as a baby, raised in poverty, declared mentally retarded. None of this stopped him. It took one teacher to open his eyes to realize his true potential. His teacher reminded him not to pay attention to the opinion of others. When Les Brown told his teacher of his label of “educable mentally retarded”, his teacher reminded him not to listen to what others thought. He encouraged him to reach new heights. He mentored him and encouraged him to pursue his dreams. In pursuing his dreams, Les Brown lives his life as a public speaker who encourages others to pursue their dreams.
