Motivation

Today I present the question of which math section of the ASVAB is more difficult.  There are 2 math sections on the ASVAB: Arithmetic Reasoning and Mathematic Knowledge.

Which subtest is more challenging for you?

Arithmetic Reasoning or Mathematics Knowledge

Arithmetic Reasoning is the math section that covers word problems.  There are a variety of subtopics that are helpful to review for the Arithmetic Reasoning section.

In my course, I cover 15 subtopics for Arithmetic Reasoning:

  1. Basic operations
  2. Decimals
  3. Fractions
  4. Mixed Numbers
  5. Percents
  6. Percent, Fraction, Decimal Conversions
  7. Proportions
  8. Ratios
  9. Tax, Tip, Commission, and Overtime
  10. Interest Rate
  11. Patterns and Sequences
  12. Probability and Consecutive Integers
  13. Distance and Rate
  14. Miles per Gallon and Using Algebra to Solve Word Problems
  15. Measurement

In my course, I cover 15 subtopics for Mathematics Knowledge

  1. Signed Numbers
  2. Squares and Cubes
  3. Prime and Composite Numbers
  4. Triangles
  5. Angles and Slope
  6. Area, Circumference, and Perimeter
  7. Volume and Surface Area
  8. Real Life Application of Perimeter, Area, Surface Area, and Volume
  9. PEMDAS (Order of Operations), Scientific Notation, and Factorial
  10. Exponents
  11. Factoring and FOIL (Distribution in Algebra)
  12. Solve for x
  13. Basic Operations in Algebra (Working with Polynomials
  14. Algebra with Fractions
  15. Celsius and Fahrenheit Conversions, and Absolute Value

Which area do you prefer?  Most of the student I meet struggle more with Arithmetic Reasoning.  Sometimes people have a tough time with Mathematics Knowledge.  It all depends on the individual.
