Motivation
Today I present the question of which math section of the ASVAB is more difficult. There are 2 math sections on the ASVAB: Arithmetic Reasoning and Mathematic Knowledge.
Which subtest is more challenging for you?
Arithmetic Reasoning or Mathematics Knowledge
Arithmetic Reasoning is the math section that covers word problems. There are a variety of subtopics that are helpful to review for the Arithmetic Reasoning section.
In my course, I cover 15 subtopics for Arithmetic Reasoning:
- Basic operations
- Decimals
- Fractions
- Mixed Numbers
- Percents
- Percent, Fraction, Decimal Conversions
- Proportions
- Ratios
- Tax, Tip, Commission, and Overtime
- Interest Rate
- Patterns and Sequences
- Probability and Consecutive Integers
- Distance and Rate
- Miles per Gallon and Using Algebra to Solve Word Problems
- Measurement
In my course, I cover 15 subtopics for Mathematics Knowledge
- Signed Numbers
- Squares and Cubes
- Prime and Composite Numbers
- Triangles
- Angles and Slope
- Area, Circumference, and Perimeter
- Volume and Surface Area
- Real Life Application of Perimeter, Area, Surface Area, and Volume
- PEMDAS (Order of Operations), Scientific Notation, and Factorial
- Exponents
- Factoring and FOIL (Distribution in Algebra)
- Solve for x
- Basic Operations in Algebra (Working with Polynomials
- Algebra with Fractions
- Celsius and Fahrenheit Conversions, and Absolute Value
Which area do you prefer? Most of the student I meet struggle more with Arithmetic Reasoning. Sometimes people have a tough time with Mathematics Knowledge. It all depends on the individual.
