Mathematics Knowledge Trapezoid Answer

In my ASVAB prep course, I use a book I wrote entitled, The ASVAB Tutor’s Mathematics Knowledge Study Guide.  This book reviews geometry and algebra among other topics. Yesterday I presented a Mathematics Knowledge question.  It is a geometry question about a trapezoid.

The question is:

If a trapezoid has one base of 6 and one base of 8 and a height of 3, what is its area?

  1. 16
  2. 18
  3. 21
  4. 24

Do you know the formula for the area of a trapezoid?

The formula is A = ½ (base1 + base 2) x height

In this problem, base 1 = 6, base 2 = 8 and height = 3

A = ½(base1 + base2) x height

A = ½(6+8)2

First add 6+8 which equals 14

A = ½(14)2

Take ½ of 14.

½ of 14 is 7

A = 7 x 2 = 14

Area is 14.
