Mathematics Knowledge Question

In working as an ASVAB tutor, I remind my students of the importance of studying geometry in order to prepare for the Mathematics Knowledge section of the ASVAB.  To be prepared for geometry on the test, I tell my students to know the different types of shapes and their formulas.  The formulas I present in my class include the formulas for area, circumference, surface area, volume and perimeter.

Today I present a Mathematics Knowledge question.

It is a geometry question about a trapezoid.

The question is:

If a trapezoid has one base of 6 and one base of 8 and a height of 3, what is its area?

  1. 16
  2. 18
  3. 21
  4. 24

In order to solve this problem, it is necessary to know the formula for the area of a trapezoid.

Tomorrow I will present the answer and explanation to this problem.
