Mathematics Knowledge Answer

Algebra is a critical part of the Mathematics Knowledge section of the ASVAB.  As an ASVAB tutor, I make sure to review various topics in algebra with the students in my ASVAB prep course.  Some of the topics I review in algebra include exponents, factoring, FOIL (distribution in algebra), basic operations with polynomials, solving for x, algebra with fractions, etc.

Yesterday I presented a Mathematics Knowledge question.

The question is an algebra question that is the topic of algebra with fractions.

The question is:

If 5/6x = 30, what does x equal?

A.  20

B. 25

C. 36

D. 42

To solve this problem, you need to get the x on one side of the equal sign and the numbers on the other side of the equal sign.  There is a fraction in front of the variable.  To get rid of a fraction in front of the variable, multiply by the reciprocal on both sides of the equation.

The reciprocal of 5/6 is 6/5.

6/5 times 5/6 cancels itself out just leaving x.

Then multiply 30 by 6/5

30/1 x 6/5 =

Reduce 30 and 5 to become 6 and 1.

6/1 x 6/1 = 36/1

The answer is 36.

The correct choice is C. 36.
