Marine Corps Birthday
Founded November 10, 1775
As an ASVAB tutor, I value the significance of recognizing military holidays, observances, and anniversaries. Today is one of those days. Today, November 10, is the Marine Corps’ Birthday. The Marine Corps was founded on November 10, 1775, by the Second Continental Congress. The Second Continental Congress commissioned Samuel Nicholas to raise two Battalions of Marines. He went to Tun Tavern that day and appointed Robert Mullan, the owner of the tavern to become the first United States Marine recruiter. Tun Tavern is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Tun Tavern was burned down in 1781. Interstate 95 runs through its original location. A sign stands on the street where Tun Tavern existed, honoring this place as the birthplace of the United States Marine Corps.
After taking part in the American Revolution, the Treaty of Paris (April 1783) abolished the Marines. Congress ordered the creation of the Marine Corps on July 11, 1798. It was set under the service of the Secretary of the Navy.
Each year to honor the anniversary of the Marine Corps, an annual ball is held, the Marine Corps Ball.
