K-9 Veteran’s Day
In working as an ASVAB tutor, I value the importance of recognizing various military holidays. Some military holidays and anniversaries are more commonly recognized than others. Today is a holiday that might not be as well-known as some others. Today is March 13, K9 Veteran’s Day. This day recognizes the dedicated K9 units who have served since World War II. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941, dogs were called to duty. During World War I, the United States saw the European use of dogs in various tasks in the war. Dogs were used as sentries, message carriers, and other jobs. A program called Dogs for Defense was set up by a woman named, Mrs. Alene Erlanger. The American Kennel Club worked together this group and with breeders to train dogs for military use. March 13 is the official birthday of the US K9 Army Crops that was founded in 1942. The idea for this day came from Joseph White, a retired military working dog trainer.
